Alice and the Digital Dump

an article I wrote for trAce, the online writing centre, in March 2005

Digging in the sand as a child at the British seaside, adults were fond of warning not to dig too deep or I might drop right through to Australia. What nonsense, I thought, but how fascinating, like Alice falling down the hole to Wonderland. Not so nonsensical now, I wake up my computer and come out in Australia, Japan, USA, or Canada. And like the looking glass in Alice’s parlour, I find my computer screen “turning into a sort of mist” and before I know it I’m through the glass into another world.
